Research Focus

At present, the Chair’s research focuses on two inter-related thematic areas, the one being mental health and deaths and diseases of despair (due to suicide and drug and alcohol abuse), and the other being an investigation into socio-economic inequality in the exposure to and impact of suicidality in the global South and North and the economic evaluation of postvention programmes for suicide bereavement.

Research Projects and Programmes
The Lelapa Consortium for Research on Family Health and Development

A collaborative project with University College London (UCL), this seed-funded research programme support the achievement of the SDGs by building a multi-disciplinary consortium focussed on the study of family well-being and inequalities across the life-course within socio-ecological contexts where family structures and networks are being transformed by the forces of urbanisation, migration, climate change, pandemics, globalisation and social transformation in low- and middle-income countries.

‘From Despair to Hope: The Role of Social Innovation in Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention in High-Risk and Hard-to-Reach Populations in the Global South and North’

‘From Despair to Hope: An Exploratory Perspective on Mental Health and the Exposure to and Impacts of Diseases and Deaths of Despair in the Global South and North’

A collaborative project with the University of Bamberg and the University of New England, this research project will be collecting survey data in five countries (Australia, Germany, India, South Africa and the United States) with the aim of exploring the exposure to and impact of diseases and deaths of despair and its association with mental health, including the mental health treatment gap, within different developmental contexts with a view to informing further research on and postvention policy responses to this growing public health challenge.

In addition, the Chair conducts research on a wide array of topics as part of his supervision of post-graduate students and post-Doctoral fellows.
