Manning Up to Healthcare Avoidance’, 29 November 2022

This panel discussion, chaired by, with guests Yandisa Skweyiya (SAMRC), Nonhle Soni (Sonke Gender Justice), Justine Lacy (Profmed) and the PPS Chair in Health Economics, Professor Frikkie Booysen, focused on the magnitude and reasons for men’s avoidance of healthcare and the interventions that may enhance healthcare seeking among men, especially for issues related to their mental health.

This panel discussion, chaired by Ina Skosana (The Conversation Africa), with guests Matshidiso Lencoasa (Section27), Dr Sophie Pascoe (HE2RO) and the PPS Chair in Health Economics, Professor Frikkie Booysen, took place at the Chair’s launch. The panel discussion focused on an interrogation of issues regarding (NHI) and (UHC), including the country’s recently promulgated National Health Insurance Bill.

From Despair to Hope: Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention in the Global South and North’, 14 May 2024

The purpose of this one-day Symposium, bringing together speakers from the global South and North, with a keynote address by Professor Jason Bantjes from South Africa’s Medical Research Council (SAMRC) titled “Disruption, Agency & Resistance: Suicidal Experiences of Young Men and Women in South Africa”, was to reflect on research, practice and activism around suicide prevention and mental health promotion.
