The Public Economy Project at the SCIS invites you to the launch of the Public services, government employment and the budget report

Using expenditure and payroll data, the report assesses the allocation of resources to basic education, healthcare, and the criminal justice system. It considers government employment levels and trends in the average pay of teachers, nurses, police officers and other government employees. The report estimates the impact of government’s proposed fiscal consolidation on the provision of social goods in South Africa.

The launch takes place one week before the Minister of Finance tables his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement and will provide important context for understanding the MTBPS and the deepening consequences of South Africa’s fiscal crisis for social provision.
