Competition rules

These competition rules (“rules”) explain your rights and duties under this competition. If you take part in this competition or accept any prize, these rules will apply to you, and you agree that the University can assume that you have read and agreed to be legally bound by these competition rules.

Competition Name: Wits Photography Competition 2025

Description:

The competition provides students with an opportunity to showcase their photography skills and creativity, while fostering engagement within the University community. The competition also serves to celebrate campus life, architecture, and student experiences through visual storytelling.

Entries open and close:

This competition will run from 17 March – 25 April 2025

Eligibility: Who qualifies to take part?

If you enter this Competition you agree to adhere to all the qualifying criteria.
This Competition is open to all Wits students who are currently enrolled at Wits.

Who cannot take part?

The following persons may not take part in this competition even if they qualify to take part. They will forfeit (give up) any prizes awarded to them:

  1. Any person involved in designing, running and overseeing this competition;
  2. Any supplier of goods and services in connection with this competition;
  3. Any other person who directly or indirectly controls the promoter(s); and
  4. The spouse, life partner, siblings, children, or parents of any of the persons named in a, b, c, or d above.
  5. Alumni students and staff
How to enter?

To stand a chance to win the Competition the following process needs to be followed: Go to: www.wits.ac.za/photography-competition and click on “SNAP & WIN” and fill out the form.

Criteria

The categories are:

  1. Wits is Beautiful (anything entrants want to take photos of)
  2. Student Life
  3. Black and White photos
  4. Beautiful Buildings
  5. Staff in action (remember to get permission first!)
Winners announced on:

Friday, 16 May 2025
The winners will be contacted via cellphone and e-mail.
The winners’ use of the prize will be entirely at his/her own risk and he/she will indemnify and hold Wits harmless from any incident, injury, harm, death, damages, costs and/or loss which he/she may suffer as a result of the use of the prize.

What is the prize?
  • 11 Lucky winners can win their share of R10 000 in Takealot vouchers.
  • The top 20 entrants will each receive a certificate.
  • The prize is not transferrable.
How will winner(s) be chosen?

By a panel of six judges from Marketing and Alumni.

Data Usage and Privacy Policy

Participants in the Competition understand and agree that, in order to offer the Competition, we may collect and use personal information about participants. This personal information may include a participant's first name, last name, email address, mobile number and in certain instances your image.

We will treat your information in total confidence and will not sell, share or rent this information to any other third parties. We may disclose information if required to do so by law or if it is required to protect the safety, rights or property of the University or the public.

By entering the competition, you grant to the University a royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to use your submitted photograph for marketing and promotional purposes.

General

Participants in this Competition agree that we will, subject to prevailing law, have no liability whatsoever for any injuries, losses, costs, damage or disappointment of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly from acceptance, misuse or use of a prize, or from participation in this Competition. The laws of the Republic of South Africa govern this Competition. If any provision or part of these Rules is deemed void or otherwise unenforceable in law then that provision or part shall be deemed excluded and the remainder of these Rules shall remain in force. Any violation of these Rules will result in the immediate disqualification of the transgressing participant from the Competition.

GENERAL RULES:

  • You may not submit any entries that are derogatory or harmful to the promoter(s) or any other
  • Only individual entries are allowed (no group submissions)
  • Each participant may submit up to 5 photos
  • Photos must be original and taken by the participant
  • Both amateurs and professionals are welcome
  • Minimal editing is allowed (cropping, colour correction, and exposure adjustments)
  • Only JPEG or PNG formats will be accepted (no RAW files)
  • Only high-resolution photos (larger than 1MB) will be accepted
  • Each photo must not exceed 5MB in size
  • AI-generated or heavily manipulated images will not be accepted
  • No watermarks, signatures, or text overlays are allowed
  • Pictures must be given a name e.g. “Fun in the sun”. If the picture has no title, it will not be eligible to win a prize.
  • You may not misuse the Competition in any This includes sending content for commercial purposes or distributing spam or malicious code.
  • Entries must not contain any content that is normally prohibited by Wits University, such as explicit or offensive
  • If you fail to comply with any part of these rules you will be disqualified, and you will give up (forfeit) any prize(s).
  • You may not attempt to do anything to change the outcome of the Competition in any The promoter(s) will disqualify anyone identified for manipulating results, criteria or processes used to select the winner. These actions may lead to disciplinary action being taken against the employee up to and including dismissal. The promoter(s) may also at its own discretion, refuse to award any prize to winners if there is reasonable suspicion of any irregularities.
