Witsies matter in discovery of 'God particle'

- By Deborah Minors

Wits physicists were part of the team at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) that announced the discovery of particle consistent with Higgs boson – the ‘God particle’ that theoretically explains the origin of particle mass and holds the universe together.

ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) and CMS (Compound Muon Solenoid) particle detector experiments constructed by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland revealed the particle, the discovery of which was announced at a particle physics seminar in Melbourne, Australia, on 4 July.
