ENERGISE Centre tackles just energy transition

The African-German partnership will link research, entrepreneurship and policy to tackle some of the continent’s toughest energy challenges.
The University of the Witwatersrand hosted the inaugural ENERGISE Annual Symposium from 14–17 September 2026 in Johannesburg. The symposium marked the launch of the ENERGISE Centre (ENabling a Just Energy Transition through Renewable Energy, Governance, and Innovative Sustainable Entrepreneurship), an African-German partnership funded through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with support from the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) and the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
The symposium brought together researchers, academics, policymakers, industry representatives and other stakeholders from South Africa, Germany and beyond to explore opportunities and challenges associated with a Just Energy Transition in South Africa. The programme showcased ENERGISE’s interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, postgraduate education, innovation and Living Labs, while strengthening collaboration and knowledge exchange across the partner institutions.
The symposium also provided an opportunity to establish new partnerships and advance practical approaches that connect research and innovation with policy, entrepreneurship and real-world energy challenges.
