Fiona Els is using wastewater collected from aircraft and airport terminals to detect pathogens before they appear through routine disease surveillance.
Fiona Els joined the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) at Wits as an epidemiologist in March 2023. She has a joint appointment with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and GCRO, working with both organisations to determine the burden of Covid-19 on urban communities.
