Wits staff sport to host major intervarsity tournaments

Teams prepare for competitive games and look forward to networking and regional collaboration.
The Wits Staff Sports Club, established in 2019, is gearing up to welcome staff athletes and officials from several regional institutions, including Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, the University of Johannesburg, North-West University, UNISA, the University of Namibia (UNAM), and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). The tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 September and spectators are welcome.
“Hosting this prestigious regional event presents a unique opportunity for Wits staff sport to showcase the University's world-class sporting facilities, organisational capabilities, and commitment to staff development and wellness,” says Dr Loyiso Maciko, Secretary General of the Staff Sports Club and football player.
Equally important, the tournament will foster networking, cultural exchange, and regional collaboration among participating institutions, further strengthening relationships across the higher education sector in Southern Africa, he says.
Growth and consistency
The club continues to make significant strides in staff sport participation and development having added new sporting codes this year.
The well established teams - soccer and netball teams have enjoyed a rewarding season thus far.
The soccer team is competing in the highly competitive Wits external league and has delivered an outstanding performance throughout the season. The team currently occupies second position on the league table with 43 points following an impressive campaign of victories and consistent performances. With four league fixtures remaining, the team remains firmly in contention for the championship title and will need to secure maximum points from their remaining matches to claim this prestigious honour.
Meanwhile, the staff netball team made history this year by participating in the student league for the first time. After eleven matches against competitive youngsters, the team has recorded five victories and six defeats and currently sits eighth on the league standings. Beyond the results, the season has provided invaluable experience and a solid foundation on which to build future success.
Looking ahead
Looking beyond the Intervarsity Tournament, the Club is preparing for two major competitions later in the year. Wits will participate in the University Staff Sports Association Tournament, scheduled to take place at the University of the Free State from 7 to 11 October 2026. This will be followed by participation in the Southern African University Staff Sports Association Tournament, which will be hosted by the University of Namibia from 6 to 12 December 2026.
The Club has also received the support sponsors and partners whose support continues to make these opportunities possible. Special thanks go to Olives and Plates for sponsoring playing kits for both the soccer and netball teams. The Club also extends its gratitude to Gold One for its generous support, which has enabled the club to attend both the University of the Free State and University of Namibia tournaments.
