FEBE launches new Mechatronics Engineering degree

The School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering will offer the degree.
The degree is one of the first steps in reviewing the curricula offered by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). “It speaks to the second of the strategic pillars of the Faculty for the next five years, as we try to align with global trends, particularly with Industry 5.0. We will be looking at ensuring that we continue to drive excellence in our operations and admin systems, and become more visible in public and academic engagement with our respective societies and professions, and then ensuring that we build a culture of inclusivity,” said Professor Cuthbert Musingwini, Dean of FEBE.
The pillars include:
- Improving ranking, reputation, and research excellence.
- Reviewing curricula to align with global trends, specifically moving from Industry 4.0 towards Industry 5.0.
- Driving excellence in operations and administrative systems.
- Increasing visibility in public and academic engagement with professional societies.
- Building a culture of inclusivity.
The new degree offers a unique programme, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI), entrepreneurship and innovation alongside mechatronics engineering competencies.
This is particularly relevant to current First Year Engineering students, who can apply to join the programme this year for second year in 2027.
