The 2025 Wits Sport Awards were a celebration of sporting excellence on-and-off the field.
Applause, lights and a much-earned red carpet time were the name of the game as the Wits Sport Awards on Thursday, 7 October 2025. Wits Sport hosted their annual awards ceremony to celebrate and honour athletes for their stellar achievements throughout the year. The Sturrock Park Hall was filled with athletes, staff and supporters as they celebrated the heights that the Wits sporting community had reached over the past year. The ceremony was themed ‘Rising Stars’ in recognition of the rising athletes in the Wits community.
Wits Sport, along with sponsors Campus Central, MTN, Kappa, and Aquelle, came together to commemorate the grand achievements of the University’s biggest athletes. This was a night filled with entertainment, energy and passion that brought the community together and highlighted the rising stars that power the university’s sports.
The first award of the night was dedicated to recipients of the Wits Half Blue colours, awarded to athletes who attained an *USSA title, placed at a junior championship and/ or represented a senior provincial A team for two consecutive years, among some other qualifying criteria. This was one of the most awarded categories of the night, with winners from volleyball, basketball, rugby, chess, karate, e-sport, hockey, netball and swimming. This was followed by the Full Blue colours as well as the Full Blue Cum Laude, with winners from Tang Soo Do, hockey and fencing.
These stellar achievements were just some of the exciting victories of the night. The Rising Star Sportswoman and Sportsman were Ametisse Bandu and Luca Trevisan, respectively. Some of the major honours of the night included Junior and Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. Junior Sportswoman of the year was claimed by Ametisse Bandu, who represented the country at the Africa Region 5 tournament, while Junior Sportsman was taken home by Thando Biyela who represented South Africa at the World Championships in Italy. The Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman were sponsored by MTN, and they were awarded to Ian Limbe from basketball, while Senior Sportswoman was awarded to Chineye Eneaye from basketball.
Honorary awards were bestowed upon those who support Wits athletes. William Matlakala, Vinolia Austin and Faith Mashile, among others, were recognised for their contributions to their respective teams, and to the Wits sporting community at large. In line with celebrating achievements beyond the pitch, Campus Central sponsored the Social Media Award, which celebrates the sports code with the most social media presence, and this was received by the Wits Football Club.
Among many other awards, this ceremony ensured that every member of the Wits Sport community felt valued and encouraged. The event celebrated the top achievers and inspired many others to continue and reach similar heights. In the words of the outgoing WSC, Carryeann Boshoff, “there is power in presence,” and Witsies continue to show up and show out to push themselves higher and higher.
