Braamfontein gets a fresh new look on Ameshoff Street

The upgrade supports art and life in the City, with Braamfontein being one of the key gateways to the vibrant social, intellectual and cultural life in Jozi.
The Braamfontein Improvement District (BID) has unveiled the Ameshoff Street Identity and Placemaking Project, a dynamic celebration of art, architecture, and urban life in the heart of Joburg. Unveiled on 17 October, the project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of one of Joburg’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.
The bold urban regeneration project was made possible through a partnership between the BID, Liberty Group, Joburg Theatre, and the Consolidated Urban Management Corporation (CUMC). Together, these partners have revitalised both ends of Ameshoff Street starting at Eland Square at Jan Smuts Avenue to the Theatre Plaza outside the Joburg Theatre.
Wits University, a member of the BID community, forms part of this collaborative vision to enhance the character and safety of Braamfontein as a thriving urban district.
A Space for Art, Light and Prosperity
The R3 million upgrade features striking new lighting installations, public benches, and a mosaic watershed fountain at the foot of the entrance leading to the Joburg Theatre. The design aims to foster a sense of belonging and pride among residents, professionals, residents and visitors, while encouraging greater pedestrian activity and nighttime safety.
Speaking at the launch, Israel Mogomotsi, Director of Operations and Facilities Management at Wits and board member of the BID, emphasised the significance of the project:
“The completion of this project is a significant milestone in our shared vision of creating safer, cleaner, and more dignified living, working and recreational environments for all residents of Johannesburg.”
With its renewed design and vibrant character, Ameshoff Street is an example of impactful public-private partnerships.
The BID is also completing phase 1 of the road infrastructure upgrade project on Jorissen Street. This project aims to improve the long-term functionality, experience and safety of road users, pedestrians and commuter cyclists on Jorissen Street.
