- Wits University

Wits voted as the best tertiary education institution by Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni residents.

Best of Joburg

The University of the Witwatersrand has been named the best tertiary education institute by over 500 000 Caxton readers in the Best of Joburg Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Best of Joburg Readers’ Choice Awards is one of the city’s most successful and enduring competition. Readers from the northern suburbs of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni vote for the best of the best across various categories including eats and drinks, glam, kids and teens, dining out, shopping as well as living in Joburg.

This award comes as the university celebrates its centenary. In September Wits hosted an extravaganza homecoming celebration hosting Joburg residents, and alumni from across the country as well as from around the world. Over the past 100 years Wits has nurtured over 200 000 graduates who have made and continue to make their mark in South Africa and around the world including four Nobel prize winners and 91 prestigious Rhodes Scholars. The University has served as the foundation for entrepreneurs, activists, social scientists, leading business and legal stalwarts, musicians, artists, scientists, engineers, doctors and sportspersons.

Steeped in the history of the city, Wits was initially established as a mining school, the university has played an instrumental role in building the city and has grown with Johannesburg.

According to the #bestofjoburg site Wits has long been a centre of excellence and earning a place to study at the institution is still the ultimate accolade for Joburg learners.

It is an honour to be named the best tertiary education institute in the city, especially by the residents of Johannesburg, said Shirona Patel, Head of Communications at Wits University.

Ranked among the top 500 best global universities, Wits continues to be a leading institution from the global south producing world-class academic and research excellence while driving innovation.  A catalyst in the country Wits is the first South African university to launch a digital mine, discover the world’s oldest dinosaur embryos, to publish a Zulu-English dictionary as well as open the first full-sized planetarium in Africa.
