A note of support to the UCT community
Wits extends its support to the UCT community.
The Council of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) on behalf of its staff, students and alumni, extends its heartfelt sympathy to the UCT community and the people of Cape Town during this very difficult time.
The ongoing fires and the resultant damage to buildings, libraries and property is indeed a national tragedy, which impacts on millions of lives, and our collective historical memory. However, despite this destruction, we are grateful that no fatalities have been reported, and that the UCT community remains safe.
As a sister university, Wits would like to extend its support to the UCT community, and will be liaising directly with the able UCT leadership to determine if we can assist in any way. In the interim, we encourage members of the public to support the relief efforts put forward by UCT.
We wish the UCT and Cape Town communities strength during this challenging period – we know that you are resilient and that you will emerge stronger from this catastrophe. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
