Wits University has been ranked among the top 200 universities in the world.
This is according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020. Over 1,400 universities across 92 countries are assessed using 13 calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Globally there are over 24 000 recognised universities.
Wits University has made steady progress and is ranked 194 – earning a spot among the top 200 best performing universities in the world.
Wits attained the highest research score among universities in Africa, based on its research output and its reputation for producing research that moves society forward.
“We are pleased with this improved position,” says Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Postgraduate Affairs.
“It’s a significant jump reflective of the performances-tracking indicators put in place by the University. Wits has made significant investment in supporting research output over the last two to three years,” said Vilakazi.
Wits’ research output has increased by about 50% over the last five years with over 85% of publications in high-impact, high-quality international journals.
Vilakazi has extended a hearty congratulations to all members of the Wits community who have contributed towards achieving this goal.
“We are now ranked in the top 1% globally,” he said.
The university is strengthening its position by supporting and leading work in new areas of knowledge such as the fourth industrial revolution and automation.
