Statement from the Senate of the University of the Witwatersrand

- Wits University

Senate's statement on the Conduct of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training.

“The Senate of the University of the Witwatersrand expresses its shock at the alleged conduct of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, who is accused of the assault of women in the recent past. The Senate is particularly disturbed at these allegations given Mr Manana’s role in championing ‘She Conquers’, a programme on young women and HIV, as well as his leadership role in developing a policy framework for addressing gender based violence in universities in the Department of Higher Education and Training.

We call on the authorities to make proper investigations and to ensure that the law is enforced. While these investigations are pending, we call on Mr Manana to step down, or be suspended, from the above positions.”
