Update on protests at Yale Road North re: accommodation issues (09:00)

STATEMENT FROM THE SENIOR EXECUTIVE TEAM ABOUT PROTESTS ON YALE ROAD NORTH RE: ACCOMMODATION ISSUES (09:00)

Dear Colleagues

A group of about 100 students are blocking the Yale Road North entrance to the University. The protest is peaceful although a tyre has been burnt, causing smoke at the entrance.

The students seem to be protesting about issues related to accommodation particularly at Yale Village. This is the new residence that opened this year. They have asked to hand over a memorandum to management.

The Dean of Students is available to receive the memorandum and to engage with the affected students.

Protection Services (formerly Campus Control) is managing the situation on the ground and the police are on standby.

There is no change to the academic programme. Staff and students should use alternative entrances to the Braamfontein campuses today.

We will share further details as they become available.

Thank you

Senior Executive Team
