SCIS invites you to a hybrid seminar by Mark Heywood on Rethinking Activism: Protecting peace, people and the planet - The challenges facing (civil) society

The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) invites you to a hybrid seminar presented by Mark Heywood on Rethinking Activism: Protecting peace, people, and the planet—The challenges facing (civil) society on April 3rd, 2025, from 12:30 to 14:00 (SAST).

Abstract:
Mark’s presentation will be both a celebration and a critique of social justice activism in Africa. It recognises the sacrifices and achievements of activists, but also raises questions about why activism is failing to halt socio-economic and gender inequality. It raises an alarm about the deepening social, economic and political crisis in Africa and the world, a crisis that makes today’s activism even more difficult and dangerous. It debates building power and what activists need to do to rethink, retool,
and revitalise both our methods and the way we understand power in the world.

Speaker Bio:
Mark Heywood is a social justice activist and writer, currently involved in a variety of campaigns on issues such as access to sufficient food and health care services. He has co-founded and led a number of successful NGOs and social movements, including the TAC, SECTION27, Corruption Watch. He recently founded a new organisation, the Justice and Activism Hub. He also works as a senior researcher at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at UCT.
