Mathonga Elizwe – Spirit of the Land

Mnqobi Ngubane is a senior lecturer at Nelson Mandela University. His research is on land and agrarian reform in Southern Africa, with wider Global South, and Eastern Europe interests on current reversals of land redistribution progress. He is the executive producer of a film, Mathonga Elizwe – Spirits of the Land, set in South Africa. He is currently working on, and fundraising for, the next film, Sechaba Sa Basotho, the Lesotho Land Question.

This seminar is a film screening of a short film called Mathonga Elizwe – Spirit of the Land. It is a true story of latter-day land struggle in South Africa. The film lays bare the struggles of ordinary South Africans in obtaining land through the democratic land tenure reform process. Protagonists tell their stories of struggle and constant frustrations on white-owned land. Antagonists unapologetically undermine the land reform process and stunt its progress. Beyond odds the future seems bright for the land claimants manifested in their well calculated struggle through the Land Claims Court of South Africa.
