September is Deaf Awareness Month!

HI HOPES, an early intervention programme that supports families of deaf and hard-of-hearing children, celebrates 20 years this September. Based at the Centre for Deaf Studies at Wits University, the programme has served as a lifeline for thousands of babies and their families navigating what can be unfamiliar territory.

Friday, 18 September will feature a panel of parents of Deaf children alongside experts in early childhood deafness. Researchers will also share highlights of evidence-based research on the efficacy of HI HOPES.

Saturday, 19 September will celebrate Deaf Culture through Deaf art, film, storytelling (in English and South African Sign Language, as well as arts and crafts. Expect handmade crafts from the Deaf community and a flea market supporting entrepreneurs. Visitors can also experience the Chatter Hands Café, operated by skilled Deaf baristas.
