A Neo-Arcadian Tale: BLACK Pan in South Africa's Pastoral Romance
This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from Alexander Appolis as he shares personal reflections and unique insights into his exhibition, A Neo-Arcadian Tale: BLACK Pan in South Africa’s Pastoral Romance. Please be aware that due to ongoing road upgrades, street parking availability is very limited. We encourage the use of e-hailing systems for your convenience.
Presented as the final instalment of Alexander Appolis’ PhD in Creative Work, A Neo-Arcadian Tale invites viewers into a poetic world shaped by hidden or marginalised archives. Moving between inner and outer landscapes where the shadow of Pan appears, the exhibition begins with a lingering question:
"On the night of nights, when the awed whisper ran through the world – ‘Pan – Pan is dead’ – did the gods of Greece and Rome in very truth droop and die? Or were they drawn into the service of the new faith, and bent to its use?" Fairbridge, D. 1928. The Pilgrims Way in South Africa. Oxford University Press: Humphrey Milford. p.187
Museum hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 – 16:00
Entrance is free and all are welcome
Exhibition dates: 20 May – 5 July 2025
