THE AFTER EFFECT _ SOWETO 1995 a play that revolves around the life of Joe Makinta, a 49-year-old activist and revolutionary, released from prison after serving 18 years for anti-apartheid activism. Joe returns to his community, only to find that his wife, Thandi, has married his former comrade and friend, Moses, "Ta'Moss" Qoka, who is now the Minister of Safety and Security. Joe struggles to come to terms with the betrayal and the fact that his community seems to have forgotten his sacrifices. He also discovers that, Ta'Moss sealed a deal with the apartheid regime, which led to Joe's imprisonment. The community is revealed to be under some sort of mind control, triggered by a robotic system program instilled in their ears, which prevents them from discussing apartheid.
