Bilectal investigations of grammar (and some perspectives for education).
This talk examines the cognitive and linguistic effects of bilectalism and multilingualism, focusing on how language proximity shapes multilingual adaptations.
Drawing on 15 years of research in Cyprus—a uniquely positioned linguistic and sociological context—the study explores object clitic placement among bilectal speakers of Cypriot and Standard Greek, including children with typical and impaired language development and neurotypical adults.
The findings situate bilectalism on a continuum of bi-/multilingualism and raise questions about the underlying grammar of Cypriot Greek. Within the Speaking in Tongues theme, the research offers insights for educational practices in Cyprus's increasingly multicultural and multilingual classrooms.
