The lecture is part of an activity day exploring the origins of mathematical thinking. Co-hosted with the Wits School of Mathematics.

The talk will focus on two mathematicians of disadvantaged backgrounds who defied the odds and received their doctoral degrees in mathematics during the apartheid era!

Professor Ismail Mohamed and Dr Joe Mokoena, both WITS Alumni.

Loyiso Nongxa is a South African mathematician, chairperson of the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) and a former Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Wits University.
