Title of Talk - Beyond the Digital Cold War: China, Africa, and the future of the Internet

Iginio Gagliardone is Associate Professor in Media and Communication at the University of the Witwatersrand and Associate Research Fellow in New Media and Human Rights in the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP), University of Oxford, UK. His research focuses on the emergence of distinctive models of the information society in the Global South. He is one of the leading experts on China-Africa relations in the digital space. His book “China, Africa, and the future of the Internet”, has offered the first empirically grounded account of the role China is playing in shaping information societies in Africa, and of the possible repercussions on the conceptualisation of the global Internet.
