A policy review: South Africa's progress in systematising its international and national responsibilities to protect, promote and support breastfeeding

To better understand policy determinants of breastfeeding in South Africa, Patricia Martin-Wiesner, CoE-HUMAN policy analyst, has investigated government-led mechanisms and processes including the 1981 International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and the 1991 Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, to both of which South Africa is a signatory. She has also investigated the state of implementation and monitoring of mothers' breastfeeding rights in the workplace. The report was done in close collaboration with the Department of Health and civil society organisations and was published in January 2018.
