Sports Bursaries

Wits Sport awards a limited number of bursaries each year to deserving student athletes.

APPLICANTS

Bursary awards are made possible by funding from the university itself, and by the generosity of alumni, the business and non-profit communities, and past Wits sports achievers. Applications for sports bursaries for the 2025 academic year, open on the 1st of April 2024 and close on 30th of September 2024. Please complete the online form here. Please note that only online applications will be accepted. Queries may be directed to the relevant sports officer (list of contact details available under the contact us tab).

We have allowed applicants who have missed the deadline to complete the Wits Sports Bursary Form to apply for Late Sport Bursary Applications. The potential awarding of bursaries for late applicants will be funding dependent and given consideration in February. Please complete the online form https://forms.gle/yFErw7Qz8Xxo5yUB6

Wits Sport also offers a full programme of academic support - academic monitoring and regulation - to ensure its bursary-holders meet their academic commitments as well. Bursary-holders may arrange a one-on-one consultation with Wits Sport bursary-academic support officer Rezana Hoosain by e-mail only.

DONORS

Picture a stadium, a heaving crowd of 20 000-strong, stomping the stands and roaring in unison over commentators breathless and babbling as elite athletes take aim, strike, score!

At Wits University, our blood is blue and gold. In our stadiums and pools, on our fields and courts, and across physical and virtual multi-sports terrains, our elite academic athletes exemplify the academic excellence for which Wits is internationally renowned, and they embody an ethos of holistic intellectual and physical development, for good – both their own and others.

The addition of a new state-of-the-art, high-performance facility, will see the new Wits Brian and Dorothy Zylstra Sports Complex deliver world-class infrastructure for elite athletes, coaches, sports and therapeutics scientists, and sporting events. It offers Witsies and our city’s sports people the opportunity to live, breathe, learn, play, transform, and research sport.

To sustain and advance the diversity of sports at Wits that deliver well-rounded citizens to the world, our student academic athletes need your support.

We invite you to don your blue and gold, grab your vuvuzela, gather the cheerleaders, and invest in Wits Sport.  As the Olympians say, ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together’. As the Witsies say, ‘For good’.
