From Alistair & the Wits-to-Rio 2014 crew, to all our supporters, contributors, families, and friends:
I have just been making sure all our supporters names will be on the WITS sticker that will be on the sides of the boat. Good grief there are a lot of you. It’s amazing how many people have come through for us. We have just spent a very busy week together in Cape Town getting Aladdin ready for her trip. She is currently moored at Royal Cape Yacht Club. There were a million and one jobs to do, small and big. The big things were getting the engine running, stepping the mast (which means taking it out, something for your sailing jargon dictionary), and getting all the required and very necessary safety gear together. We slept on the boat and it made for a very efficient work schedule. We would wake up at around 7, crawl out of bed and start a job. By 10 or so we were too hungry to carry on so we would find some food. After that it would be back to the boat until dinner time. After dinner the day’s jobs would be finished off and then it would be off to the showers and in to bed. With some misadventures along the way, such as performing some bush medicine on Patrick’s foot and stripping the thread out of a pretty important engine component, we got there. The mast will be re-installed tomorrow morning and the safety inspection will be done later in the week. (Don’t worry Bjorn, the engine is fine, and has a brand new priming pump.) Yesterday Brad and the guys took Aladdin out for a test run of the engine. It ran beautifully. We were also joined during the week by Ciao Bella, the Robinson boat that will be sailing the Cape to Rio as well. She had to be delivered from Durban and so Brennan sailed her down. Alexa had to lend a hand from Mossel Bay to Cape Town because of an unfortunate crew mishap but it was good to have them there with us! Four of our crew are now at Theewaterskloof Dam for the annual inter-university sailing competition. I am here in Gauteng and Stuart is in Durban. Brad and Ricardo are taking breaks from the sailing at the dam to get the final touches done on the boat before her inspection, which should happen on Thursday. With 32 days to go, we’re making good progress but still have lots to do.
