Wits Future Research Leaders Fellowship

THE PROGRAMME

The University of the Witwatersrand invites applications from exceptional scholars whose research excellence and leadership potential position them to become the next generation of internationally recognised research leaders. The Future Research Leaders Fellowship Programme is a strategic initiative aimed at attracting outstanding mid-career researchers to establish internationally competitive research programmes at one of Africa’s leading research-intensive universities. Located in Johannesburg, Africa’s economic and innovation hub, the University provides a dynamic environment for cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global partnerships. Applications are invited from candidates whose research aligns with the University’s most critical frontier Areas, including areas relevant to Wits MIND, such as: AI and Quantum Computing; Health Innovation; Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing; Climate and Atmospheric Science.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Successful candidates will be appointed to five-year research positions at the rank of Associate Professor, designed to support the development of internationally competitive research programmes through the supervision of postgraduate students, establishing of global research collaborations and securing sustainable research funding.

ELIGIBILITY

This programme targets mid-career researchers who have already demonstrated significant research achievements and are poised to establish or expand independent research programmes. Applicants will typically:

  • Be more than 10 years post-PhD
  • Demonstrate a sustained record of high-quality research outputs
  • Demonstrate successful postgraduate supervision
  • Show clear evidence of research independence and leadership potential
  • Have established international collaborations and scholarly networks
  • Demonstrate the potential to secure competitive research funding

HOW TO APPLY
