
Wits University is home to 20 South African Research Chairs, nine research institutes, 18 research units, four research groups, five Centres of Excellence, more than 200 rated scientists, of which 16 are A-rated. Wits features in the top one percent in the world in seven defined fields of research (2007 ISI international rankings)

Wits is home to 16 NRF A-rated scientists, based on a stringent evaluation of an individual scientist's research record over five years. These scientists are international leaders in their disciplines.

The institutes will foster an international reputation through quality research based on complex multidisciplinary questions. They will generate new knowledge, influence policy and have a sustainable social and economic impact both locally and abroad.

Wits has 35 research entities, six of which are Medical Research Council units. It is also home to 19 prestigious National Research Foundation Chairs. Wits is the proud home of five Centres of Excellence in Biomedical Tuberculosis Research, Strong Materials and Aerospace, Drug Delivery and Antiviral Gene Therapy.

Given the breadth and depth of research at Wits, no single publication of this sort can hope to cover all that happens within the institution, but we do profile some specific success stories. The rest of the reports are intended to be indicative of the sort of research conducted at Wits.
