Guiding Principles of Operation
A concise set of Guiding Principles of Operation have been established for the NAC. These principles reflect on those matters essential in support of the efficient management and operation of the centre and include aspects such as governance, project participation and the handling of intellectual property, amongst others. Some of these principles state that:
- The NAC is a programme of the Department of Trade & Industry and is hosted by WITS University. The Director of the NAC reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), who in turn reports annually to a Management Board, comprising representatives of all stakeholder groups (Government, Industry and Academia) and who oversee the operation of the NAC.
- The core members of the NAC are the Universities of Cape Town, Kwazulu-Natal, Pretoria, Stellenbosch and the Witwatersrand These core members are responsible for bringing into the NAC as associate members, other academic institutions (including Technical Universities (former Technikons), Further Education and Training Colleges and the like), and industrial partners (national as well as international).
- Associate membership of the NAC for industrial partners will be based on their interaction with a core member of the centre. In other words, an industrial partner has to participate in and contribute to - both financially and technically - project(s) to be undertaken under the auspices of the NAC.
