CIO Practice Level 3: Certificate in Advanced Professional Practice for Digital Innovation and Leadership

This CIO Practice Level 3 Certificate course covers the digital landscape, making innovation happen, module-driven performance improvement and agile methodologies, digital cities and the emerging playground of the digital world, advanced strategy and leadership, and a mini-dissertation or research project.

The environments of business and government have become increasingly data-driven. In this context, organisations must undertake effective business re-engineering, ensure effective security measures and risk management, and foster effective utilisation of the Internet for marketing and electronic transactions. An increasingly mobile Internet means an increasingly mobile workforce, which may present an opportunity or a threat. To manage these challenges, organisations appoint CIOs, who lead teams responsible for the strategy, design, procurement and operation of the ICT-enabled business. CIOs lead through strategic capability, technical knowledge, and excellent team-building.

The Wits CIO Practice Level 3 Certificate course (aligned to NQF Level 8) consists of 13 months of study, comprising three online classroom sessions (each lasting one week) and self-study via individual/group assignments. Participants complete an individual research project, which is also a requirement for entry to LINK Master's programmes, making successful participants eligible to apply for Master's study.

(Note re: course NQF level: The NQF level cited above is from the South African National Qualifications Framework. According to the requirements of the South African Council on Higher Education (CHE), short courses are not accredited at NQF levels. However, the LINK Centre aligns each of its courses to a particular NQF level -- as a means to guide the course's level of difficulty and level of assessment.)

This course is focused towards IT professionals who report directly to CIOs, or who are CIOs themselves. The course is designed for IT professionals who preferably have a three- or four-year degree or diploma and at least 8 years' work experience. It is for individuals who already hold senior IT positions and are looking for a formal educational programme addressing the complexities of digital innovation and leadership.
