BCom part-time with Law

Students will be studying towards a BCom degree, with Law as one of the majors instead of another BCom course.

Overview

The BCom gives you excellent training in critical thinking skills combined with a breadth of professional business knowledge. The specialised BCom with Law degree is suitable for students who are interested in a specific field in business but who also wish to have a background in law.

Part-time students receive the same qualification as full-time students at Wits.

Part-time students are required to do the following:

  • You need to attend lectures on the Braamfontein West Campus in the evening. Students attend lectures one evening a week for each course being studied. 
  • Normally part-time students are allowed to register for a maximum of three (3) full year courses or six (6) modular courses in a year. Experience has shown to us that it is very difficult for students to cope with more courses while working and also maintaining a healthy family life.
  • Lectures are usually held in the evenings (17:30-21:00) but specified courses or tutorials may be held on Saturday mornings (09:00-13:00).  

This may be subject to change depending on the final timetable.

If you want to practise law, you need at least an LLB degree.

BCom Degree with Law

Choose one BCom major from the following, with Law as the second major:

  • Accounting 
  • Insurance and Risk
  • Marketing 
  • Management 
  • HR
  • Corporate Finance and Investment

You earn points as you progress through courses, with a minimum total of 432 points for BCom.

APS 43+
English Home Language OR First Additional Language Level 5
Mathematics Level 5

Wait-listing

Applicants with an APS of 35-42, as well as English Level 6 and Mathematics Level 6, will be wait-listed subject to place availability.

Prior to 2008 - Old Matric
  • Matric with full exemption and an admission rating score of at least 26. 
  • Success in English on Higher Grade (first or second language) with a symbol of D or above and Mathematics with HG (D) or Standard Grade (C). 

Applications from students currently studying Law at other institutions, and who do not have an undergraduate degree, will be considered if they have passed at least three courses at that institution, two of which must be Law courses. If applicants do not meet this requirement, they will have to apply for the general BA or BCom and then convert once they have successfully completed their first year of study.

Students who have completed National Diplomas or BTech degrees, will be allowed to enrol for the BA or BCom general degree first and can convert once they have successfully completed the first year of study.

In cases where students already hold a degree and want to enrol for a full degree with Law (e.g. engineers looking for a full degree), their first degree will be accepted as meeting the entry requirements, but they will not be credited for courses passed in the previous degree. Students who already have degrees will be allowed to register for Law courses for non-degree purposes as occasional students.

Compliance with the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place at the University. The University has a specific number of places for first year undergraduates, approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results and other entry requirements where applicable.
