MSc Aeronautical Engineering

The MSc in Aeronautical Engineering is the only 18-month accredited degree of its kind in Africa. It uniquely offers aircraft design and is partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Overview

The Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering degree is a NQF level 9 qualification that can be completed by Research Dissertation or by Course Work and Research Report (50/50).

In the Research Dissertation option, the candidate prepares a dissertation that constitutes both an application of the methods of research and a contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the subject chosen.

In the 50/50 option, candidates present themselves for a dual degree offered in Collaboration with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Candidates who elect this option will be required to follow the following curriculum which includes two elective courses, two compulsory ERAU courses, the Research Methods Course, and a Research Report. Entry Requirements

For the Research Dissertation and 50/50 option:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering 4th year or equivalent cognate qualification (NQF 8) average >= 65 % may be admitted to Master of Science
  • The 65 % may be reviewed if the applicant has relevant working experience those described in the Differently Qualified Applicant tables.
  • A supervisor from the Faculty of Engineering or the Built Environment must be identified and approached prior to application.

In the case of the ERAU dual-degree 50/50 option, candidates are required to maintain set Grade Point Averages that are outlined here.

University Application Process

  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.
  • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
