In June 2002, he left for a sabbatical year at Harvard Law School. He concentrated primarily on industrial relations and dispute resolution, completing the Harvard Trade Union Program, the Harvard Mediation Program and the Harvard Program on Negotiation. He was also a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School under the guidance of Professor David Westfall, a labour law professor at the School. While in the US, Alli worked as a mediator at Quincy Court in Boston.
A lli Chicktay was appointed a lecturer at the school of law in June 1998. He is currently registered for a PhD at Wits Law School. Since 1999, he has also served as an advocate in the Johannesburg High Court. He is also a trained mediator and labour arbitrator. He has lectured on comparative constitutional law at the University of Rwanda and has also briefed diplomats of the South African Department of Foreign Affairs on international labour standards.
