Professor Elias Degiannis described the many pillars that make up the academic trauma unit.
Professor Elias Degiannis delivered his inaugural lecture titled A hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy of Bara trauma on 9 December 2014. The trauma unit was created at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in 2003. It is now the largest trauma unit in South Africa (possibly even in the world) with the next largest unit having one third of the admissions compared to the Soweto based trauma unit where he serves as a Chief Specialist.
The Unit performs an average of 450 resuscitations a month. Degiannis described the many pillars which make up this academic trauma unit and the pride which staff and students feel in serving at outstanding unit.
