Gateways Project construction commencement notice

- Wits University

Construction work to upgrade the entrance at the Oppenheimer Life Sciences steps and to create the new Sutton Close entrance will commence on 7 March 2018.

The Campus Planning and Development Department wishes to notify the University community of the commencement of construction in relation to the Gateways Project.

The project will result in the upgrade of the pedestrian entrance at the Oppenheimer Life Sciences (OLS) steps, situated on Jan Smuts Avenue and the creation of the new Sutton Close entrance on Jorissen Street, located between Richard Ward Building and Solomon Mahlangu House.

The objective is to improve access to the University by creating more welcoming pedestrian entrances for staff, students and visitors.

These entrances will have iconic design elements and will boast universal access to accommodate users with mobile and visual impairments; charging points; Wi-Fi connectivity; covered roof areas for protection from the sun and rain, CCTV surveillance; information points and retail facilities.

Construction will commence on 7 March 2018 and will continue for up to four months.

During this time, please use the Station Street entrance (next to the Wits Theatre) as an alternative entrance. You are requested to kindly make adjustments to your personal schedules to accommodate the extra time needed to walk to this entrance.
