Research

The School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies is one of the most productive research nodes at Wits. Staff members contribute regularly to local and international publications, and are members of the editorial boards of many prestigious journals. The School has an excellent reputation both locally and internationally as one of the leaders in African scholarship on issues such as climate change, evolution, environmental justice, geomorphology, pre-colonial African farming, rock art, and sustainability.

Bokoni Urban Farmscapes Bokoni is the only place in South Africa, and one of the few in Africa, where people used stonewalled terraces for agricultural purposes. The Bokoni Urban Farmscape project is researching the innovative approaches to farming in Bokoni, and long term relationships with the land, as well as the environmental conditions these farmers had to navigate.

Klasies River Mouth The Klasies River archaeological site is located in a series of caves and overhangs to the east of the Klasies River Mouth, Eastern Cape, South Africa and contains both MSA (Middle Stone Age) and LSA (Later Stone Age) deposits. The current research programme aims to expand knowledge of the site both through revisiting material from previous excavations and excavating new material.

Southern Gauteng SWS The Southern Gauteng Stone-Walled Structures (SGSWS) project aims to shed light on the social, economic and political organization of the inhabitants of the landscape between the Witwatersrand ridge and the River Vaal before the arrival of the first European settlers here in the 1830s.

Rock Art Research Institute RARI is a world leader in the study of rock art. The research of the institute is rich in its diversity, and includes the ancient and historic rock arts.

Centre in Water Research and Development CIWaRD CiWaRD supports research and development in water by embracing complexity and collaboration as the mechanism of creating novel findings and insights.
