Physiotherapy

The Postgraduate Diploma is offered in Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy (NMS) or in Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy.

Overview


The Postgraduate Diploma can be completed over a period of one or two years. If this degree is done in one year, then three courses are completed in the year - Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and the course in the area of specialisation (NMS or Sport). 

If this Postgraduate Diploma is completed on a two-year basis, the distribution of courses is Pathology, Anatomy and Physiology lectures and practical in the first year and the area of specialisation (NMS or Sport) in the second year. 

Curriculum


The Pathology, Anatomy and Physiology courses consist of four face-to-face contact weeks consisting of lectures (blended learning) and practical spread out throughout the first year. The final examinations are performed over a period of two to three weeks at the end of the year. 

The specialisation course consists of five face-to-face contact weeks consisting of lectures (blended learning), workshops and clinical exposure spread out throughout the year. Students are expected to be working clinically in the area of specialty. The final examinations are performed over a period of two weeks at the end of the year. 

Entry Requirements


  • Applicants must hold a BSc/B(Physiotherapy) degree
  • Applicants must show evidence of one year clinical experience (which can be community service / internship year)
  • Registration with the HPCSA

  • Motivation letter stating:
    1. Why you want to apply for the PGDiploma;
    2. Area and number of years of clinical experience;
    3. Relevant postgraduate courses attended;
    4. Content covered in your undergraduate training relevant to area of speciality.

If you hold a foreign qualification, you must submit proof of evaluation of your qualification by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

University Application Process


  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.
  • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
