Human Genetics

The Master of Science in Medicine by research only in the field of Human Genetics is a 1 year full time or 2 year part-time degree.

Overview


The MSc is a minimum of one year full-time or two years part-time.

Students are required to initiate a research project, submit a research proposal for approval, obtain ethics clearance, complete the research work and submit their work for examination

 

Career Opportunities


The MSc degree is a research degree. Students can remain in research or progress into related field in industry, teaching, laboratory service and management.

Curriculum


The degree consists of only a research component and require a submission of a dissertation or thesis.

Admission to these degrees require prior acceptance to the programme by a research supervisor within the Division.

Entry Requirements


  • A Bachelors degree of at least four years duration or a Bachelors degree followed by an Honours degree. A 65% minimum average is required for entry.
  • A supervisor from the Faculty of Health Sciences (usually within the Division of Human Genetics) must be identified and approached prior to application.
  • Approval from the respective supervisor and Head of the Division where the student intends to be based is required.

  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
