Mathematics in Industry Study Group in South Africa (MISGSA) 2004

The first Mathematics in Industry Study Group in South Africa (MISGSA) will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand from Monday 19th January to Friday 23 January 2004.

You are cordially invited to participate in the Study Group. The Study Group brings together mathematicians and industrial researchers for five days of intensive collaboration on six to eight projects submitted by South African industry.

There is no registration fee because delegates provide their time and expertise free at MISGSA.
There will be no charge for meals.

Meals are an important meeting time at MISGSA where problems are discussed and progress is reviewed.Moderators play an essential role in a Mathematics in Industry Study Group as described under the heading "Study Group".

Moderators have the incentive that they will be the leading author in any publication. Also the travel costs of moderators will be paid by MISGSA.

Potential moderators should be aware that everyone will help and that we are all somewhat out of our depth to start with. Moderators are not expected to be experts in the field.

The initial contribution of a moderator is to put together some useful information before the start of MISGSA.

Sometimes it is useful for someone on the second day, Tuesday, to briefly fill in theoretical background and this need not necessarily be the moderator. Participants interested in doing this should contact the moderator.

Students are especially welcome at MISGSA. It is a good opportunity to observe and actively participate in the problem solving process. Problem moderators will be encouraged to find suitable tasks for the students.

Students may apply for financial support on the registration form. Please return the completed registration form by the 12 January, 2004. It will greatly assist arrangements for catering and accommodation.Late applications will be considered.
