Our students come from positions at some of South Africa’s most prestigious organisations and institutions, including Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), Goodman Gallery, Hector Pieterson Museum, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Market Photo Workshop, Stevenson, Springs Art Gallery, Strauss and Co, and Wits University.
Belinda Kholeka Shange – PhD in History of Art
Shange is currently pursuing a PhD in History of Art under the supervision of Dr Nicola Cloete. Her research is focused on photography and its representation of 20th century Zulu royal women in King Dinuzulu’s lineage.
Zandri Oosthuysen – MA in History of Art
Zandri Oosthuysen is a Masters student at Wits History of Art. Her research report, titled “Looking Closely by Candle Light” is focused on a painting by South Africa artist Johannes Phokela.
Lindelwa Pepu – MA in Heritage
Lindelwa Pepu is currently undertaking an MA in Heritage with a focus on the agency of artists. Using a curatorial mode in particular relation to Xhosa beadwork, Pepu is exploring the role of the researcher as curator in returning the voice of makers to their objects.
Bev Butkow – Honours in History of Art
Bev Butkow a full-time, self-taught artist, currently studying towards an Honours degree in History of Art. The focus of her artistic and research work is on gender inequalities, education, the Other, as well as belonging and exclusion.
Gontse Mathabathe – MA in History of Art
Gontse Mathabathe is a Johannesburg-based curator, researcher, and artist. She is currently studying towards a Masters degree in History of Art, with a focus on curating and African art collections. She completed a Bachelors degree in Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2015.
