Joburg Graffiti Tour

In the context of the third year course on constructs of Africa (History of Art III C), we go on a 2-hour inner-city graffiti tour of Braamfontein. Revisiting Alfred Gell’s understanding of artworks as ‘embodiments or residues of complex intentionalities’, and guided by archaeologist and inner-city tour guide Jo Buitendach of Past Experiences, we reflect on possible connections between graffiti and rock art.

Great Zimbabwe on CNN

Postgraduate student, Griffin Shea, published an article on CNN about the History of Art postgraduate excursion to Great Zimbabwe. 

Postgrad Excursion to Maputo

Postgraduate students in the History of Art department travelled to Maputo, Mozambique on a research excursion in September. While there they met with and interviewed Gonçalo Mabunda at an exhibition of his work at Fundação Fernando Leite Couto.

Postgraduate Excursion to Great Zimbabwe, September 2014

As part of the courses African Art History and Postcolonial Art History, postgraduate students travelled to Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo province in Zimbabwe.
