Principles and Practice of Translation

Be the best translator you can be.

This course aims to equip language graduates with a comprehensive range of practical and theoretical skills they will need to work as professional translators. To provide learners with a general overview of the principles and practice which govern the translation profession, both in terms of practical translation skills, and in terms of the critical evaluation of translations. Texts for translation reflect the typical range of texts encountered by a professional freelance translator and may include journalism, media/advertising, health/medical and general technical texts. This course aims to reinforce ethical and professional behavior relating to translation practice.

Course Fee

The course costs R11 500.

Duration

The course is part-time and runs for 8 weeks (40 hours) 

Qualification

This course is presented as a stand-alone course.  Participants who successfully complete this course may apply to be credited for one honours module in Translation at Wits University.

Programme Overview

This postgraduate course in translation is aimed at learners who have extensive translation experience. This course focusses on technical, legal and academic translations. Learners are given feedback by language experts who are well-established translators.

This course is presented in a blended learning format with online support and face-to-face classes on the following days:
03, 04, 25 & 26 August 2020 and 08, 09, 29 & 30 September 2020.

Curriculum

Participants who successfully complete this course may apply to be credited for one honours module in Translation at Wits University.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • A 3-year degree in any field (approved by SAQA).
  • Fluent English.
  • Fluent in at least one other language.
  • Basic computer literacy.
