Editing for Professionals

Acquire the skills to function as a fully equipped editor/proofreader at a high level.

In this course, students are introduced to the principles of systematic and recognised editing procedures governing grammatical, structural and stylistic correctness in a variety of professional text types.

Course Fee

The course costs R9 300.

Duration

This course consists of a three-day, face-to- face workshop, followed by a second two-day workshop, plus an online learning component, during the eight-week teaching period.

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a certificate of competence.

Programme Overview

This posgtraduate course is aimed at learners who have extensive writing and/or editing experience. Learners are exposed to various editing techniques as well as given instruction on how to use a variety of elemtns in Microsoft Word to aid in producing high quality documents. Learners are exposed to techniques for editing, proofreading, copywriting and plain language.

This course is presented as a set of two face-to-face workshops with an online component throughout, where learners are required to complete tasks online.

The online part of the course starts on 4 March 2019.

Face-to-face contact sessions are on the following dates:
26, 27 March 2019
9, 10, 11 April 2019

The summative assessment is Scheduled for 26 April 2019.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course:

  • A three-year degree or equivalent (approved by SAQA) OR extensive editing experience.
  • Fluent English.
  • Basic computer literacy.
Career Opportunities

Editors work in a variety of different sectors, including media, government and academia.  Learners who complete this course can also enter the freelance market.
