Simultaneous interpreting for conferences presented by international trainers

This short course is a credit-bearing short course towards the Honours in Interpreting.  Participants are generally aspiring professional conference interpeters who wish refine their skills in conference interpreting.  The trainers for this course are internationally renowned conference interpreting trainers who themselves interpret at the highest level. They are all AIIC members (International Association of Conference Interpreters)

Qualification

This course is presented as a stand-alone course.  Participants who successfully complete this course may apply to be credited for one honours module in Interpreting at Wits University.

Programme overview

This short course is a credit-bearing short course towards the Honours in Interpreting.  This course is aimed at learners who have successfully completed "principles and practice of interpreting". The trainers for this course are internationally renowned conference interpreting trainers who themselves interpret at the highest level. They are all AIIC members (International Association of Conference Interpreters). This course focusses on interpreting in the simultaneous mode and specifically assists interpreters in develoing the necessary skills to interpret in stressful situations.  Learners are also shown how to cope under pressure to ensure that the quality of the interpreting product remains at a consistently high level.

Curriculum

Participants who successfully complete this course may apply to be credited for one honours module in interpreting at Wits University.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course:

  • A 3 year degree (approved by SAQA if needed).
  • Fluent English.
  • Fluent in at least one other language.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Successful completion of "Principles and practice of interpreting".
Application Process

Step 1: Submit an enquiry form

Step 2: Complete the WLS Application Form

Step 3: Submit certified hard-copies of the following documents:

          a. Senior certificate (or equivalent)
          b. South African ID document or passport and ID (non-South African)
          c. Marriage certificate (if the surname on the Senior certificate and ID do not match

Step 4: Send us the completed registration form and a certified copy of your ID to wls@wits.ac.za 

Step 5: Complete an English Language Assessment test with a result of level 3 or higher.

Step 6: Complete an online Interpreting aptitude test.

Step 7: Upon receiving confirmation of acceptance into the course with attached invoice, please send us the proof of payment to wls@wits.ac.za to secure your seat. Note that the course must be paid upfront as we do not offer payment installments. 

Career Opportunities

Learners who successfully complete this course should have the skills to interpret in the simultaneous mode at national conferences.
