English for Postgraduate Study

Develop your academic writing skills and boost your success rate.

This course exposes students who are enrolled for a postgraduate degree in the medium of English to academic literacy skills. Using a "funds of knowledge" approach and communicative language teaching theory, instructors welcome student interests into the classroom so that they can have a realistic application of what they learn to their fields of study.

The course costs R8 750.

Duration

This course is part-time and runs for 10 weeks (50 hours), excluding induction week.

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a Certificate of Competence. 

Programme Overview

The English for Postgraduate Study course offers students the opportunity to develop their Academic English skills in order to evaluate multiple sources of knowledge and develop their academic viewpoint; access, process and manage information by critically reviewing it and synthesising different perspectives within it; discuss relevant ethical issues in their fields with critical reflection; identify, analyse and address complex or abstract problems, drawing systematically on relevant research in the field; and present and communicate academic ideas and texts to a range of audiences.

Curriculum

In this course, students will be exposed to generating their own ideas; the postgraduate academic writing process and the structure of a research paper/report including the required sections such as the introduction, review of literature, research methods, data analysis, results, discussion, conclusion and implications; developing an academic voice of authority; grammar in academic discourse; the language of generalisation and presenting their ideas verbally in a formal, academic context.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • A completed undergraduate or Honours degree
  • All students must be literate and numerate
  • All students are required to complete a pre-assessment to determine the student’s level of English proficiency (the pre-assessment is done on-site and takes 1½ hours)
  • Entry to this course is dependent on students demonstrating NQF level 7 language proficiency.
