The course aims to develop the English language skills needed to gather and critically assess information and evidence in a balanced and reflective way and to reach conclusions that are justified by reasoned argument based on the available evidence.

Course Fee

The course costs R11 100.

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

This course is a contact, part-time course and runs for 10 weeks (50 hours), excluding the examination session.

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a Certificate of Competence.

Programme Overview

The course aims to develop the English language skills needed to gather and critically assess information and evidence in a balanced and reflective way and to reach conclusions that are justified by reasoned argument based on the available evidence.

Curriculum

In this course students practise how to read, listen and write critically. Inductive and deductive arguments are identified, evaluated and constructed in spoken and written forms. The point or purpose of remarks is identified (such as the use of idiomatic expressions) and appropriate inferences are made. Students also distinguish the functions of language and its capacity to express and influence meaning.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • No specific school or tertiary qualification is required
  • All students must be literate and numerate
  • All students are required to complete a pre-assessment to determine the student’s level of English proficiency (the pre-assessment is done on-site and takes 1 hour)
  • All students must complete the report writing course.
  • Entry to this course is dependent on students demonstrating NQF level 5 language proficiency.
