Bursary opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students

Huawei Bursary Opportunity 2019



Huawei Technologies Africa (Pty) Ltd is offering Bursaries for full time final year Honours and Masters level students of the University of Witswatersrand (“WITS”) for the 2019 academic year.

The following criteria will be applied when considering applications:

  • South African citizens only.
  • Average mark from June/July 2018 exams =   65% and above.
  • The applicant’s complete academic record will be assessed in order to evaluate consistency and satisfactory academic results.
  • Equity applicants (Only African, Coloured & Indian)
  • Students must provide proof of University course application, or alternatively provide proof of provisional acceptance for one of the following fields of study for 2019:

- Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical (Light Current), Electronic, Computer, and Telecommunication) or;

- IT, or;

- Computer Science.

  • Students enrolled in special study programmes including: diplomas, certificates and non-degree studies, are not eligible for consideration.
  • Students who will, during 2019, receive funding under any other assistance programme, including but not limited to scholarships and bursaries, will not be eligible for consideration with the exception of University Merit Awards.
  • Only students who are in their final year of studies, or are enrolled for a one (1) year course only, will be considered for the Bursary.
  1. B. Huawei reserves the right to conduct interviews with applications as part of the selection process.
  2. It is the obligation of the successful Bursary Student to provide proof of 2019 registration of one of the courses mentioned above to the Advancement – Development and Fundraising Office of WITS by 11th February 2019.

Bursary Conditions:



  • No funds shall be released to the successful Bursary Student until such time that the relevant proof of registration is submitted and verified by the Advancement – Development and Fundraising Office at WITS.
  • The successful Bursary Students will be required to enter into a Bursary Agreement with Huawei Technologies Africa (Pty) Ltd following the award of the Bursary.
  • Successful Bursary Students must continue to study on a full time basis at WITS, towards the course that he/she has been registered for, and remain at WITS for the duration of the 2019 academic year.
  • Successful Bursary Students must successfully complete the registered course within the 2019 academic year and will be required to enter into a 12 month contract of employment with Huawei Technologies Africa (Pty) Ltd following the completion of the registered course.
  • Failure by a successful Bursary Student to comply with any of the Bursary Conditions shall result in the withdrawal of the Bursary.


Successful Bursary Students, who do NOT wish to accept the bursary, must notify the Advancement – Development and Fundraising Office of WITS of this in writing within ten (10) days (Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays excluded) of receipt of the Bursary Offer, failing which the successful Bursary student shall be bound by the Bursary Agreement.

Distribution of Bursary Amount:

Each Bursary Allocation shall be distributed towards the following:

  • Tuition (proof of cost to be provided by University)
  • Accommodation (Proof of lease agreement between student and Landlord/University)
  • Book allowance (Proof of cost to be provided to University)
  • Meal allowance
  • Transport costs (Where applicable)
  • Stipend

  • a certified copy of your ID (not older than 3 months);
  • proof of application or provisional acceptance for your intended, qualifying study course;
  • complete academic record/transcripts (stamped by the University);
  • your CV.

Opportunities to Study in France

Applications are invited from all Masters, Honours and BSc Engineering students.

Masters: Students with a bachelor have to  spend two years for M1+M2 in France, students with an honours degree can get directly into M2 providing they are accepted by the French university. Otherwise they will have to go through the full cycle M1 + M2. All areas are eligible (science, engineering). There are a large number (1400) of English Masters students that students can find at the following address :


PhD : Students should be funded in the framework of a cotutelle program (sandwich program, with up to 6 months per year in France, with a co-supervision and the two degrees awarded. All areas covered as well.

The dead line for applications is 15th March 2019. 


The programme funds everything : living expenses, flight ticket, tuitions fees in public universities and engineer schools (not in private ones).
