How can actuaries be a force for good? A dive into the world of financial inclusion partnerships.

Speaker: Soshan Soobramoney and Divya Babu, Old Mutual

 Abstract:

The actuarial profession possesses unique skills to address global inequality and the socio-economic challenges associated with such disparity. This talk investigates financial inclusion within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and explores the role of partnerships in tackling financial and socio-economic challenges. The discussion will explore how partnerships with regulators, other corporates, the development sector and on-the-ground retailers can drive financial inclusion. Numerous innovative partnership-based solutions will be explored, within the fields of microfinance, agricultural crop insurance and informal savings and loans schemes. Some of these examples will cover the speakers’ own experiences having worked on unique financial inclusion projects in India and across the African continent. The talk will conclude by exploring the pivotal role actuaries can play in this field and what more the actuarial profession can do to tackle broader socio-economic and environmental risks facing the world at large, whilst outlining the opportunities that arise from these global challenges.
