H erman Potgieter is a materials scientist with interest in minerals, metals and waste beneficiation, as well as materials degradation in aggressive aqueous and high temperature environments.
His research focuses on the utilisation of fly ash in different applications, varying from water treatment, polymers, mine backfilling, novel metals extraction to cement and concrete uses. He has conducted a number of corrosion investigations ranging from atmospheric corrosion, high temperature corrosion to aqueous corrosion in various aggressive process and mining environments. He is particularly interested in the use of PGMs to increase the corrosion resistance of Fe-Cr based alloys under reducing conditions.
